Last Words: Preparation | Phil EuBank

Lent is a tradition of many Christian churches around the world. It is an opportunity to fast from something in order to cultivate spiritual hunger in its place. Our Last Words sermon series will parallel our Lent Devotional and help our community experience a season in which God awakens us to the meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection and its implications for our lives. In this message, we consider some of the first words of Jesus before we look at his last words on the cross each week leading up to Easter. We will see how Jesus faced temptation and entered into his own season of spiritual preparation that is the foundation for Lent.

This Lenten season we are focusing on Jesus’s last words on the cross as a way to know him and follow in his way of love. From culture wars to longing for friends and family to find Jesus, we can sometimes use the ends to justify the means. And in hopes of seeing something real, we are sometimes willing to be fake. We all work to realize our deepest desires; to see our broken systems restored, those closest to us rescued, and for the Gospel to reach the hearts of everyone, even as we continue pursuing God ourselves.

Jesus asks, ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?’ We don’t need to make that trade. We must never make that trade. And while we are not God’s PR firm, honesty about our brokenness can become the beacon God uses to show a watching world that no one is too far gone.

But if our ears are not tuned to hear the small things it can be hard to hear God for the bigger ones. God will provide guidance for us, but he is more interested in the person that we are becoming. Which means we don’t have to approach the future with fear, as there is no decision we can make that God can’t redeem. And if God doesn’t provide clear direction, it means that he trusts us to move forward; we can act with confidence because we know he is with us.
