The Rest of the Story: War | Phil EuBank
Sunday Jul 30, 2023
Sunday Jul 30, 2023
Gruesome tales of violence may appear more fitting for Hollywood or history books, yet we encounter numerous accounts of war and loss in the Hebrew Scriptures. Throughout Israel's history, it seems God has employed the tool of war for a greater purpose. The challenge lies in reconciling a God who operates in such a manner for millennia with the message of love conveyed through the ministry and teachings of Jesus.

Whether we learned it in Sunday School or from the movies, most of us are familiar with the concepts of Satan, sin, and Adam and Eve making a wrong choice. But what is the rest of the story? In this sermon, we dive into a passage of the Bible known as "The Fall" and explore how everything in the world went sideways, in order to take a deeper look at these concepts and find hope.

Sunday Jul 16, 2023
Sunday Jul 16, 2023
In Genesis, we examine the story of Abraham, the one chosen by God to be the Father of His people. While Abraham is praised as a champion of faithfulness and trust in God, he faced struggles of his own. When God asked him to sacrifice the thing he cherished the most—his beloved son—Abraham confronted this challenging decision, grounded in his experience of God's faithfulness. Ultimately, he chose to place his trust in God above all else. In this sermon, we contemplate this significant event in Abraham's life and how it serves as a reminder for all of us to wholeheartedly devote ourselves to a faithful God.

Whether you love the life you are currently living or hope for something different in the days ahead, we all face unexpected challenges and encounter unreliable people. Jonah lived his "professional" career with certain core assumptions about God that He wanted to address. The thoughts and assumptions we have about God from the stories in the Bible can be overwhelming, but in this particular story, we wonder, "How could God use someone like Jonah?"

Human accomplishment has always been a significant focus in history. Today, particularly in our region, we are driven by the opportunity to increase our capacity at a pace where implications are not always clear. The Tower of Babel serves as a prime example of how far back this inclination dates and the unchecked motivations that can accompany it.

Every story points to something. For many children, the flood story points to a fun and exciting adventure involving animals, a boat, and a big rainbow... what's not to love?! However, upon closer examination, the story is not that simple and is definitely not a children's story. As we look deeper into this story, we want to wrestle with three questions: "Is this a true story?" "What does this story tell us about God?" And "What does this story tell us about humanity?"
With closer examination, we discover a story about a God who longs to redeem and restore His creation and invites us into this same story of redemption. Just like the flood story, our own stories and lives are pointing to something deeper. Every story points to something. What is that something in your story?
